With a policy of active neutrality, the country has twice earned the nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. It has also repeatedly been referred to as the “Switzerland of the Americas”. According to the U.S. Embassy website, Costa Rica is statistically safer than the U.S., and political violence is non-existent.
